WPC (English Wood plastic Composites; German wood plastic composite materials, use uncommonly) are

thermoplastic processable composite materials, which consist of different portions of wood, plastics and additives,

and by thermoplastic Formgebungsverfahren, like e.g. Extruding, spraying casting process or pressing techniques in

the thermal copying method, to be processed (new fact study compares 2005).

Structure

Typically WPC in Germany and Central Europe consist flour portion from 50% to 90% and a plastic matrix of a wood

fiber or - of polypropylene (PP) or less frequently of polyethylene (PE). On the North American market WPC with a

50prozentigen polyethylene portion dominates. Mixtures with other plastics and bio plastics are technically possible,

however few common.

The addition of additives optimizes special material properties: Connection between wood and plastic, fluidity, fire

protection, color design and - particularly for outside applications - weather, UV, and parasit stability.

Technology

The advantages are the free, three-dimensional mouldability of the material and the larger dampness resistance. Opposite all-plastics WPC offers a higher rigidity and to clearly smaller thermal coefficients of expansion. At present still no

uniform standards exist for WPC. Past long-term studies (e.g. strong et al. 2003) and cases of damage from practice (Principia Consulting 2004) showed, the

WPCs such as solid wood products by UV irradiation, moistening and temperature influence as well as fungal

Use

The sales market Decking (external floor mats) has the largest portion of for some years growing North American

WPC total volumes of estimated 700,000 t in the year 2005. For Europe WPC production is indicated as 30.000 t

(2003), tendency strongly rising. In Germany WPC is introduced in the building range and to the furniture industry

and finds beyond that in the motoring industry application. The annual production quantity for 2005 becomes

estimated on 10.000 t. Extruded terrace floor mats, baseboards and furniture profiles have to time the largest

market share. In the future further ranges of application are probable.
